MAKE PAKURANGA PEST FREE

We want native plants and animals to thrive in Pakuranga again.

To see piwakawaka flitting around catching flying insects. To hear tui and ruru day and night.

For koura and native fish to flourish in our creeks and streams.

For shorebirds to return to their historical roosting places along the Tamaki River.

OUR VISION

RESERVES

Maintain traps in significant reserves used by local and migratory birds to control and eliminate rat and possum populations.  Promote and assist efforts to clean up reserves and stop illegal dumping.

You can help by adopting a reserve nearby.

HOUSEHOLDS

Encourage home owners and tenants to obtain and monitor a pet-friendly trapping tunnel on their property.  The goal is for 1 in 5 properties – that’s over one thousand traps!

You can help by installing a rat trap and pet-proof tunnel in your back yard.

WATERWAYS

Create a line of traps along the Tamaki River, Pakuranga Creek and associated waterways to stop the incursion of rats into Pakuranga.  Promote and assist efforts to clean up the waterways.

You can help with simple actions on your own property and working beside our waterways.

GET INVOLVED WHERE IT MATTERS

Our goal is to place traps along all waterways and major reserves around Pakuranga, and assist the Pest Free Howick Ward initiative to get rat traps into 1 in 5 households.

GET INVOLVED

Monitoring a short trap line requires perhaps 30 minutes of your time weekly, and is a rewarding way to get a bit of exercise at the same time.
Even if you don’t want to help with trap lines please consider getting a free trap in a pet-proof tunnel for your own property.

SPREAD THE WORD

Tell your neighbours and friends about our vision and urge them to join the team. Are you a good communicator? We need your help to promote our cause.

OUR MOTTO

HOW YOU CAN HELP

ADOPT A RESERVE

Trees provide shelter for our bird life. They are being felled throughout the area and tall trees are increasingly becoming confined to our reserves. Ship rats are great climbers and unless we act to remove them they will continue to decimate bird populations.

We will help you get started in a reserve near you. We can obtain the permissions and signage from Auckland Council and help you install the traps and record the results.

GET A TRAP

Rats are true survivors and have spread everywhere that humans have. Even when we don’t see them they are close by in our urban environment.

We can help you to obtain a trap through the Pest Free Howick Ward project and get you
started at home.

SPREAD THE MESSAGE

We need assistance in promoting our work through this website, social media and other channels.

If this is a task that interests you we would love to talk to you.

WATERWAYS

Water quality is a major issue and our streams and estuaries are under continual threat from sedimentation and toxic wastes flushed into our storm water systems.

We will help you get started in a waterway reserve near you. We can obtain the permissions and signage from Auckland Council and help you install the traps and record the results.

OUR LATEST ACTIVITY

This summer we installed a number of possum traps with the generous assistance of Trap Library East Auckland.

We have been surprised at how many have been caught in just a small number of traps. Neighbours adjoining the reserves have remarked that there has been a big decline in the nuisance caused by these animals.
